GLOSSARY OF TERMS
Video formats,
eg.mov, avi:
This is a type of Video file that has a range of formats
which utilize codes to encode and compress video data to a smaller space e.g.
MPG.
Streaming:
This is a combination of video, sound, words and pictures
together, you are able to watch them on networks such as Netflix or amazon
prime where this is displayed on the internet for people to view, however the
user is not actively downloading it and therefore you wouldn’t have to wait for
it to download.
Another form of streaming is by sharing a live video seed to
a live audience on various platforms like (ustream) displayed over the internet
for people to view. They do not need to be downloaded meaning that there is no
need for waiting.
File compression:
This is useful when uploading videos on the internet e.g. YouTube
which does not allow you to post a video if it is not a certain size, there are
apps which you can compress the videos such as adobe and handbreak in order to
upload them.
Aspect ratios: 4:3,
16.9:
This determines the ratio of the width and height of an
image or the screen, the most common one used are 4:3 and 16:9 however images
with that ratio have slowly started to become out of date as the film industry
has updated systems so that they are able to use 16:9 which is way better and
more high definition.
Frame rates:
The frame rate is the number of
frames or images that are projected or displayed per second. Frame rates are
used in synchronizing audio and pictures, whether film, television, or video.
In motion pictures and television, the frame rates are standardized by the
Society of Motion Picture and Television Editors.
